Rijkswaterstaat – Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management

Rijkswaterstaat is the executive agency of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, and is responsible for the design, construction, management and maintenance of the main infrastructure facilities in the Netherlands. This includes the main road network, the main waterway network and water systems.

With more than 200 years of expertise in planning the country’s infrastructure, Rijkswaterstaat, know that their task involves more than executing projects on the roads and waterways. It is also about balancing the interests of the economy, the environment and quality of life. The employees of Rijkswaterstaat dedicate themselves to achieving that every day. Rijkswaterstaat therefore involves citizens in shaping their living environment and works closely with organisations such as water boards, municipalities, companies and research institutes.

This knowledge for roads, waterways and water systems does not come only from a national perspective. Internationally, they co-operate with sister organisations, universities and a large number of European and overseas authorities and government agencies. Rijkswaterstaat takes part in several European research programmes.
